Chippewa

Chippewa

The expedition passed through Ojibwa/Chippewa land in North Dakota. The Turtle Mountain Chippewa under Chief Stone Child (mistranslated as Rocky Boy) moved west into Montana sometime in the late 1870s. Along with the Cree, they were reduced to wandering for decades in search of land for themselves. Finally, the government established Rocky Boy's Reservation in 1916.

Today

There are over 4,000 enrolled Chippewa and Cree on Rocky Boy's Reservation near Havre.
